What it is
A will says who receives what. It rarely says why, or what you hope for the people who receive it, or what you would want them to remember. Words for the Road Ahead is for those things: a video you record for your family, kept sealed while you live and given to the people you name after your death.
It is included in the Bespoke tier, and can be added to any other.
Recording it
- Record at home, on a phone or a laptop, in any language, and take as many attempts as you need.
- Your advocate sends you a private link to upload it. The link works only for the upload and then expires.
- You tell us who should receive the message.
- While you live, you can replace it with a new recording or withdraw it altogether, at any time.
How it is kept
Your recording is stored encrypted, in RiteWill's private storage in India. It is opened once, to confirm that the file plays, and not again until it is released. No one but you can change or withdraw it.
How it reaches your family
- Your executor, or a person you have named, tells us of your death and gives us a copy of the death certificate.
- An advocate verifies the certificate and the identity of the person who brought it.
- Each person you named receives a private link to watch the message. The link is for them alone, and it expires.
- Until then, the message stays sealed.
It is not part of your will
The message carries feeling, not legal effect. It does not change, add to or explain away anything in your will, and it is not a record of what you intended for your property. Anything about who receives what belongs in the will itself, made with its formalities.
For that reason, we suggest you do not speak about property or shares in the recording. A message that seems to differ from the will can give an unhappy heir grounds to dispute it, which is the opposite of what you want it to do.
SERVICES THAT HELP
Words for the Road Ahead has no legal effect and forms no part of any will or other document. How it is kept and released is confirmed in writing when you commission it.
